MD<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Erik Brodt\u2019s path to becoming a physician and advocate for underrepresented communities began with a pivotal moment \u2013 the first time he met a Native American doctor.<\/p>\n<p>On June 5th, 2001, as a young Native American student himself, Brodt participated in a summer program at the University of Minnesota Duluth. That day, medical student Brett Benally Thompson and Dr. Arne Vainio walked into the room. Brodt remembers, \u201cI\u2019d never met an American Indian male physician before. I\u2019d never met an American Indian male Ojibwe physician before. After responding to a tragic school shooting at a Native American reservation, Brodt realized the power of having more Native physicians who understood the community. As families grieved, Brodt reflected, \u201cIf I\u2019m really going to help make a big difference, there need to be&#8230;hundreds and thousands and tens of thousands of us that get trained and enter the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6929cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b6929cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Opening Doors for the Next Generation\n\n<\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4895263c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4895263c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap\">Brodt has carried this vision throughout his career. Now an Associate Professor at Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU) and Director of the Northwest Native American Center for Excellence, he aims to open doors for Native American students to reach their potential in medicine. \u201cOur gift is when we look at people, we see how they belong and we see how they can make a difference one day,\u201d Brodt says.
